In short, the 5th Generation is a more refined version, with a new design and improved sound quality. However, whether it’s worth the upgrade from the 4th Generation Echo Dot will depend on your specific needs.
The 4th and 5th Generation are 30% smaller than the Amazon Echo. The new design is not only aesthetically pleasing but also takes up less shelf space, as the previous generation (3rd Generation).
Both Generations come in three colours. The 4th generation is available in Blue, Dark Gray and White, whilst the 5th Generation is available in Black, Blue and White. Both generations are available with a clock, which comes at the expense of paying £10 more. In total, there are no great visual differences, as the size of the two generations is identical. Nonetheless, the 5th generation is slightly lighter, which can be traced back to interior improvements. Furthermore, there are table stands that can add to the visual appearance of your smart speaker by sorting the cables.
Additionally, the Amazon Echo Dot 5th Generation is available in a kids version (Amazon Echo Dot Kids). Here the smart speaker is designed using animal features and the device is adjusted to be children-friendly. There is detailed information on the Amazon Echo Dot (5th Generation) that was developed for kids.
The 5th Generation Echo Dot has improved sound quality compared to the 4th Generation. The speakers of the 5th Generation have larger woofer sizes, which contribute to a better bass. The woofers in the 5th Generation can produce more output and reach higher volumes more easily. Even though the audio quality of the Amazon Echo 5th Generation is better, this does not imply that the sound quality within the Amazon Echo (4th Generation) is bad, it remains satisfactory. Since the 5th Generation was released two years later, the sound quality is expected to improve, as technological advancements can be capitalised upon.
In terms of functionality, both the 4th and 5th Generation Echo Dots do almost exactly what their earlier iterations do. Alexa is integrated into both generations making the service universal. Alexa performs identically on each speaker, answering questions, facilitating voice calls, controlling smart home devices, monitoring your home for break-ins, and much more. Both devices can be used to stereo pair with other Amazon Echo Dot generations or the Amazon Echo itself.
The only difference in terms of functional features is that the 5th Generation has a temperature sensor and an accelerometer. The temperature sensor can be integrated with your smart home and a fan could automatically be turned on when a certain temperature is reached. The accelerometer allows tap interactions to snooze an alarm or pause the music that is being played.
The value proposition of the 5th Generation is not as straightforward, as it is trying to compete with the superior smart and sound of the Echo, whilst it is continuously being pressurised by discounts of the Amazon Echo 4th Generation.
The Amazon Echo Dot (4th Generation) can be purchased for £49.99, regardless of the colour chosen.
To purchase the Amazon Echo Dot (4th Generation) with a clock, you will have to pay £10 more (£59.99).
The Amazon Echo Dot 5th Generation can be bought for £54.99 from Amazon.
The Amazon Echo Dot 5th Generation with clock can be purchased for £64.99.
Echo’s newest generation is roughly £10 more expensive. The version with the clock is £5 more expensive for the 4th Generation and £10 for the 5th Generation.
The Amazon Echo Dot (5th Generation) is the best cheap echo device. However, the 4th Geenration is a feasible option for price sensitive customers. The majority of the functions are the same. The 5th Generation only differs by having temperature sensors, an accelerometer, and a slightly better sound. For both Amazon Echo Dots (4th and 5th Generation), the availability of a clock is a nice feature that does not cost a lot and therefore, is worth its money.
